TPC Scottsdale — Stadium Course

Iconic championship course, home of the WM Phoenix Open

North Scottsdale

If you're a golfer and you're in Scottsdale, TPC Stadium Course is the round you have to play. This is where the WM Phoenix Open happens every year, and walking the 16th hole where 20,000 fans pack the stadium seating is surreal even when it's empty. The course itself is a Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish design that rewards smart play over raw power. Green fees aren't cheap, but this is a bucket list round for a reason. Book well in advance during peak season.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club — Saguaro Course in Scottsdale 2

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club — Saguaro Course

Ranked #1 public course in Arizona by Golfweek

Fort McDowell (20 min from Old Town)

Ask any serious golfer in the Valley where to play and We-Ko-Pa Saguaro is almost always the first answer. The Coore and Crenshaw design sits on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation with completely unobstructed desert views in every direction. No houses, no roads, just pristine Sonoran Desert and saguaros. It's regularly ranked the #1 public course in Arizona and it earns it. The Cholla course here is also excellent, but Saguaro is the must-play.

Troon North Golf Club — Monument Course in Scottsdale 3

Troon North Golf Club — Monument Course

Stunning desert course with Pinnacle Peak views

North Scottsdale

Troon North is what people picture when they think of Arizona desert golf. The Monument Course weaves through massive granite boulders and towering saguaros with Pinnacle Peak as your backdrop. Tom Weiskopf designed both courses here, and the Monument is the showpiece. Every hole feels like a postcard. The course is in immaculate condition year-round and the service matches the quality of the layout. A quintessential Scottsdale golf experience.

Grayhawk Golf Club — Raptor Course in Scottsdale 4

Grayhawk Golf Club — Raptor Course

Top-tier daily fee with an unbeatable 19th hole

North Scottsdale

Grayhawk is where the golf and social scene collide in Scottsdale. The Raptor Course is a Tom Fazio design that's consistently ranked among the best public courses in the state, but what really sets Grayhawk apart is the vibe after your round. Phil's Grill is legendary for post-round beers and burgers, and the whole complex including Isabella's Kitchen makes it a full day destination. The Talon course is also great but Raptor is the headliner.

Talking Stick Golf Club — O'odham Course in Scottsdale 5

Talking Stick Golf Club — O'odham Course

Links-style layout minutes from downtown, best value in town

Talking Stick (near Old Town)

Talking Stick O'odham is the best value in Scottsdale golf, period. This Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore links-style course is wide open with subtle undulations that reward creative shot-making. It's just minutes from Old Town, which makes it incredibly convenient, and the green fees are substantially lower than the big-name resort courses. The Piipaash course next door has more desert character. Locals play here constantly because the quality-to-price ratio can't be beat.

Quintero Golf Club in Scottsdale 6

Quintero Golf Club

Remote desert masterpiece worth the drive

Peoria (45 min from Scottsdale)

Quintero is a bit of a drive from Scottsdale, but every golfer on Reddit will tell you it's worth it. The Rees Jones design carved through the Hieroglyphic Mountains feels completely isolated from civilization. Several holes play through narrow canyon corridors that are unlike anything else in Arizona. The signature par-3 over the desert canyon is jaw-dropping. This is the course locals recommend when you've already played the Scottsdale staples and want something truly special.

Scottsdale National Golf Club in Scottsdale 7

Scottsdale National Golf Club

The other side, a relaxed alternative to stuffy country clubs

North Scottsdale

Scottsdale National brands itself as 'The Other Side of the Country Club' and that's not just marketing. The vibe here is genuinely different from the stiff, formal clubs you might expect. They have three courses including the par-3 'Bad Little Nine' which is one of the most fun experiences in Scottsdale golf. The main courses are world-class and the member experience focuses on fun over formality. Limited public access but worth pursuing if you can get on.

Boulders Golf Club in Scottsdale 8

Boulders Golf Club

Resort golf among massive ancient boulder formations

Carefree (30 min from Old Town)

The Boulders is one of the most visually dramatic golf experiences in Arizona. The North and South courses wind through 12-million-year-old granite boulder formations that tower over the fairways. Jay Morrish designed both courses to work with the natural landscape rather than fight it, and the result feels almost otherworldly. The resort itself is a bucket list destination, and combining a stay with golf here makes for an unforgettable Scottsdale trip.

Papago Golf Course in Scottsdale 9

Papago Golf Course

Phoenix's municipal gem, where locals actually play every week

Papago Park, Phoenix/Scottsdale border

Papago might be a municipal course but it punches way above its weight. Sitting in the shadow of the iconic Papago Buttes with views of Camelback Mountain, this is where Phoenix and Scottsdale locals play their regular rounds. The course is well-maintained for a muni, the layout is solid and walkable, and the green fees are a fraction of the resort courses. If you want to play where the everyday local golfer plays, not just the tourists, this is it.

SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Scottsdale 10

SunRidge Canyon Golf Club

Dramatic elevation changes and canyon views

Fountain Hills (25 min from Old Town)

SunRidge Canyon in Fountain Hills offers some of the most dramatic elevation changes of any course in the area. The Keith Foster design drops and climbs through rugged Sonoran Desert terrain with canyon views that make some holes feel like you're playing on the edge of the world. It's consistently rated as one of the best public courses in Arizona and the value is excellent compared to Scottsdale resort courses. The famous 'Wicked Six' finishing holes will test your game and your nerve.
